The action of the glutials is sometimes difficult to undersstand. Contracting the glutials extends the waist, which is the opposite of bending forward. They can also bring your leg backward.
Glutial contraction enables you to stand up or straighten your waist if you are bent over. It also allows you to bring your leg backward before kicking a soccer ball or start the motion of standing up from a deep squat.
